About the Book
We often hear that humans spend one third of their lives sleeping--and most of us would up that fraction if we could. This brief (163 page) book answers all of your questions about the science of sleep and sleep medicine.
In 1953, two manuscripts were published that would have vast influence on science and medicine into the 21st century. Watson and Crick discovered the double helix structure of DNA, enabling the critical field of genetic research to flourish and Aserinsky and Kleitman discovered that sleep is divided into portions with and without rapid eye movements (REM) giving rise to the fields of sleep research and sleep medicine. The discovery of episodic bursts of REMs throughout a night of normal sleep and their association with dreams launched, for the first time, enthusiasm for sleep research, which continues to this day in disciplines as disparate as neurochemistry and sleep apnea..Only recently have a number of books describing sleep research and sleep medicine been published aimed at the general public. One of these "Sleep: What it is, how it works, and why it matters", by Mendelson, is laid out in a manner that makes it especially inviting. It is divided into eight topics each of which consists of answers to critical questions regarding that topic: What is sleep? What are sleep stages? How much do we sleep and how much do we need? What are dreams? Do animals sleep? What are the effects of sleep deprivation? What are sleep disorders?Mendelson answers these and other questions with well written, accurate and readable prose in two pages or more in a remarkably concise way, always accompanied by vivid charts, graphs, and illustrations. I am as impressed by what he left out as much as by what he put in: the author clearly understands how to be cogent.I think Mendelson is able to accomplish this feat due to a lifetime in both sleep research and sleep medicine. The result is a concise and readable source for everything you wanted to know about the new science of sleep.
Interesting and informative book. Very helpful.
