A great introduction to Shape theory
This book is a great introduction to approximation via inverse systems (a.k.a shape theory). As John von Neumann says, "I think that it is a relatively good approximation to truth — which is much too complicated to allow anything but approximations." Karol Borsuk first introduced the shape theory as an approximation of compact (or paracompact) spaces via Cech approximation and general inverse systems. The authors do a good job introducing the ideas behind the shape theory for the beginner.
